I may have asked this before, or maybe it was someone else. But I don't have a recollection of the answer.
I'm thinking of replacing the nut on my Larrivee dread with a bone nut, and I wonder if I could widen the string spacing. I'm used to wider spacing on my Seagull and I notice a difference. There seems to be enough room --I'm only looking for 1/8"--but obviously I don't want the strings falling off the edges.
Anyone out there done this?

Looked into doing that once with a guitar that had a 11/16 nut.  I wantd to move out to 1 3/4 and my guitar guy said it was an easy thing to do but the E strings will be closer to the edge and that if I did a lot of bending on those strings it may be an issue.  Typically don't do too much agressive bending so I wasn't worried about it.
Ended up trading the guitar before I had the work done so I'll never know on that one.  I'm sure an experienced tech can do it right for you though.  :thumb

I have a Seagull that has a 1.8" nut on it and it plays better for me and I have long wide fingers.  I talked to my instructor about it and he said that I should be able to make a nut with the E strings close to the edge.  (Close to the edge?  Hmmm, maybe I could write a song about that.)
So, I'm going to give it a try this afternoon on another guitar I have and will let you know how it turned out.

Yeah, let me know. 1 3/4" would be great, or 1 13/16" like my Seagull. If I do it, I'll keep the old nut, just in case. Larrivee used tusq, so it's decent.
At this point I don't do much bending or anything other than strumming, but I'd like to learn Travis pickling and I'm used to a little more space.

Brian Kimsey has some very good detailed info on making a new nut.
