I'm thinking of parting with my 1981 Larrivee L-07. Mahogany neck, rosewood back & sides, Sitka top, ebony fretboard, bone nut and saddle, no cutaway. I'm the original and only, loving owner (I still have my hand-written letter from Wendy Larrivee!). This is a player's guitar, and so has a little buckle rash on the back and only a couple of extremely insignificant "character" dings.
A bit more background, if it would help: When I bought it I was working in an acoustic guitar store in Montreal, where we sold Larrivees. I knew I wanted one but I played many and waited for one that felt and sounded just right for me. I looked for the best, closest grain on the top, good bookmatching etc. Don't know if you could find any info by digging, but the serial # is: 072212, built 1981, bought 1982.
Deep, rich tone. I have two saddles (included) that I use. Low one with light strings for fingerstyle, high one with medium strings for when I want to bang on it.
Original Everest hard case. Also has a Duncan magnetic pickup (soundhole) wired to an endpin jack. (Old technology I know, but actually sounds quite good).
Neck, neck angle, bridge, top all in great shape. The only item of importance that I would tell a potential buyer is that after 25 years, this guitar could use some frets.
My question to you is:
What do you think this is worth? I know what it would cost me to replace it all but what would YOU pay for it?
This has always been a sweet guitar. Now it's 25 years old and still sweet but I don't want to under/over charge for it.
Thanks all and my apologies for the long post.
Where are you, Flatball? If you're anywhere near Toronto or Guelph, the Twelfth Fret or Folkway Music could help you put a price on it and they would probably sell it on consignment for you, assuming you're willing to pay their consignment charge.
an L-07?? Is it half mahogany, half rosewood?

I'm just outside of Montreal. I hadn't thought about the 12th Fret. Thanks for the reminder.

I believe that the L-07 went out of production a long time ago. It was essentially a "plain" L-09. No headstock inlay, and plain dot inlays on the fretboard. Mahogany neck, rosewood back & sides, Sitka top, ebony fretboard.

Will do.
I'm not familiar with the 07 designation either. I though all 09 Larrivees were fairly plain. Didn't they used to have dot inlays as well and nothing on the peghead? I'm not arguing the fact, just enjoying learning about new Larrivee models that I haven't known of before.
ahem...
I just happen to have an 07 that I purchased from The 12th Fret late last year.

It was a consignment piece. I'll send you a PM on what I paid for it.
It does have a couple of minor cracks and dings in the soundboard
btw. I bought it because of the scripted Larrivee logo that was only used for a short time, and which I think adds to its collectibility and perhaps its price.

The original L-09's headstock logo was Jean's stylized intitials. This was before they started using the word "Larrivee" on the headstocks. I've tried to find a picture with no success so far.

That's an easy one....

This L-09 was at the 12th Fret at the same time as the L-07. I bought them about 2 weeks apart in time.

Is Randy posting classic 80's porn again? :GRN> :POL>
The L-09 in fitness1's post is listed at $2399. Other folks that I've talked to have paid in the $1400-1700 range for 80s models and newer. Would I be out of line to ask around $1300-1400 for mine?
I know it's difficult to answer sight unseen. I'll try to take some decent pictures this weekend and post.
Well, I think you would need the right buyer...probably someone who would be interested in collecting an interesting piece of Larrivee history rather than someone who just wants a nice guitar to play [a late model used L-09 (with good frets) can be easily found for $1000 or less]. Sometimes this kind of buyer is hard to find. But unless you're in a hurry to sell, it certainly wouldn't hurt to list it and let it sit for a while...give it a bump every now and then. As time passes, you could reduce the price or decide not to sell it and pull the ad.
100 bones, and I'll take it :GRN>

Good, sound advice. The vintage market for anything is a bit strange. It's not about what the item is intrinsically worth but what the potential market will bear. I think that the $1000 range is probably more realistic and fair for this guitar. I just can't seem to make up my mind to list it or not. It's been a good buddy for 25 years. Thanks for your input.

If they're $12 bones, I'll think about it.
Hey Flatball, I'm in Montreal too.
A couple of ideas: last time I left my Larry to a local luthier (Lutherie M.F.) for a setup, he had an 80's L-09 on consignment. Maybe you could call them to get your L-07 appraised. Once you figure out your price you could list it on lespac.com. That's where I found my parlor. Be prepared to be patient though.
I love that logo. If they are not going to use it for pegheads, maybe they could use it for a 12th fret inlay.
