i caught a couple of shows on this channel about guitarmaking. the show is called homemade music. this guy (cant remember his name....lynn something...strange last name...german sounding in a way) was building a pre-war style dread. the thing looked and sounded amazing. after he was done he had some bluegrass shredder pick it up and really give it a workout. they even took the thing down to gruhn's guitar shop and had mr. gruhn look it over.
this is a great show to watch if youre interested in guitar building. even if you just like acoustic guitar like me, it was completely fascinating to see it all come together from scratch. and i do mean from scrath. they showed the guy picking out the tree that he made the top from. amazing, really.
anyone else like this show?
The man in question is Lynn Dudenbostel of Knoxville, TN. The show was cool and although I have never played one of his guitars I have been told his are very nice, and that he is no longer taking orders due to his backlog...don't know if that is true or not..
didn't see it, but i live in knoxville and have heard his name around town... seems to have a great reputation. I'll have to try to catch a rerun.
I've only seen bits of the show, because my wife won't let me watch it if she's in the room. :GRN>
Dudenbostels are certainly reputed to be excellent guitars (and mandolins), and they have a price tag to match!! They do sound great on the show.
Dudenbostel is a very good builder who made it to the big time after Chris Thiele (sp?) from Nickel Creek started playing a Dudenbostel mandolin. I don't know that I would wait six years and pay upwards of $10K to get an instrument from one of these builders.
I dont know about that, but I definitely think TV exposure you get you some serious buyers if you are a budding luthier. Maybe all the chopper shows should be changed into guitar making show. I know I'd watch more TV :GRN>.
Do you know that that is no less than 5 different shows on my TV about custom chopper builders!!! :SHK>
I was able to watch both series of this show that involved Lynn Dudenbostel. Great TV, IMO!
I also seem to remember seeing a show (on CMT?) that followed Jerry Douglas and Tim Scheerhorn through the design and construction of one of Jerry's custom Scheerhorn Resonators. Even my wife was fascinated by that show! :SHK>
