Title: The ONE artist/band you listen to the most
Post by: Danny on April 27, 2013, 09:30:36 AM
Another thread got me thinking of this as a topic. Over the years I tend to listen to one artist or band more than others. The Band and the Moody Blues dominated my listening for quite a bit of time in years gone by. But the last 25 years or so I seem to reach for a particular artist more than others, though of course I listen to various types of music and sometimes just prefer instrumental guitar music, especially those Nashville cats. ie Studio Musicians

Anyway for me it's Jackson Browne

So who do you listen to "the Most"

Wow. Tough call. Over the years, it would have to be the three B's ... Beatles, Band, Bob. Browne might be the 4th. Lately ... Nelson, Haggard, Jones, Cash get a lot of play.

It varies as am I sure it does for most everyone, but a quick scroll through my iTunes library indicates that Lincoln Brewster dominates my playlist.
I listen to Bebo Norman and Dave Barnes a good bit too.

It changes from time to time.
Another vote for The Band. That went on for years. And I saw Levon Helm again just 30 days before he died last year. I could have posted LH under the favorite vocalists thread the other day.
OK, and the Beatles. I always come back to those guys. (Check out the 2-DVD set:  Living In The Material World by George Harrison and Martin Scorsese. 3 hours of great stuff.)
And Jackson Browne, too. When he first arrived on the scene, and then again about 2 years ago for quite a while.
Right now I'm in the middle of another Joni Mitchell phase. Her music never gets old.

Oh yeah. The Subdudes rock. They're about the closest thing to Pure Americana since the Band broke up. Them and BoDeans.

The question of a single band that I have listened to the most isn't easily answered.  It all really depends on what era of my life I am thinking of.  Some standouts include Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, and currently Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree.

Lately it's been Fred Eaglesmith, Richard Buckner, and the Alabama Shakes.

But you said "one artist"  so I guess Fred Eaglesmith would top the list right now

Fred's awesome and gets quite a bit of rotation with me as well but I gotta say, I prefer him live and in person.

Yes, Fred is quite a character.  He probably spends almost as much time talikn' between songs as he does singin'.   I see him every time he comes around my area.   He has a way of turning a phrase in his songwriting that seems like he's just tellin' you a story.

Takes a while to warm up to his voice, but the guy sure knows how to put a song together.

Like many of you, my favorites have changed over the years.  Currently, I would say I'm tending more towards "country swing" if that's the right term for it.  I like listening to Asleep at the Wheel, early KD Lang, Cowboy Junkies.  Also enjoying early Soul/R&B.  Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, etc.

This is one, like many of you before me stated, varies a lot.  For the one artist right now it is Meschiya Lake and the Little Big Horns.  They are from New Orleans.  She just won the Big Easy award for best female vocalist for the 3rd consecutive year and the Little Big Horns won best traditional band.  I figure one must be pretty good to take first in those categories in New Orleans.  Her voice is amazing and the band is equally good.  Close seconds would be Brian Martin and Tony Rice.  I will have to check out the Sub Dudes.  I'm not familiar with them.  And a little J. S. Bach everyday is very good for the soul.

He almost incited a riot at the last concert I attended. It might have gotten ugly. There were a bunch of young idiots at the back of the room who wouldn't shut up. I know he doesn't suffer fools gladly but I think it's dangerous to egg on people to shut other people up. Saying things like, "In my day, some bigger guys would go back there and straighten those assholes out" is walking on shaky ground.

It's more than walking on shaky ground. It's walking on a coward's ground. If he found them that offensive, to make those kinds of statements, he should have shut them up himself and suffered what ever repercussions, or, perhaps, concussions, that occurred.

There was lots of beer involved too. It seems like this has become part of Fred's schtick, being interactive with an audience, and although it was a great show and Fred can be hilarious, it concerned me that it could certainly get out of hand.

Over all the years....Charlie Christian and Clarence White.   Those are timeless to me. Never get tired of them.  But in general there are so many good bands out there in different genres that I , that I hate giving anything that sounds like 1 or 2 favorites. Little Feat and The Band as mentioned are right up there, along with about 100 others.

lately, Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessel, Grant Green and from Brazil Djavan and Toninho Horta. Gotta agree with Unclrob about the Subdudes. Years ago, around the time of their 3rd album release, the lead singer and guitarist (Tommy Malone) slid up next to me at the bar at the old Musicians Exchange in Ft. Lauderdale and asked if he could talk about what the local music scene was like here. We chatted for a while, I told him I had heard of them from a friend who owned a local record shop. He had been an A&R man for Atlantic and they had been booked as the entertainment for an industry insiders conference. He said they were great and to look out for them. It took a few years, but later they broke out briefly. Malone said that they had worked the club scene in New Orleans for years and could not catch that big break. Giving up on making it at home, they moved to Colorado, where they were amazed that they were "discovered" fairly shortly.

I was wondering if anyone was going to bring up jazz artists. I watched a concert last night (Montreal International Jazz Festival 2004) with the incredible Oscar Peterson along with his long time drummer and a couple of Swedes including Ulf Walenius on guitar. He was playing some disreputable looking, grungy Les Paul copy with string ends waving about and more dirt than you'd find under a farmer's fingernails but man could he and they ever play!
Anyway, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Charlie Christian, Benny Goodman, Miles Davis, Lenny Breau, Pat Metheny and the list goes on.

This is a great thread. Helping me realize how many brothers I've got here. huge Little Feat fan. They are the band I always return to. Same with the Subdudes, and back in the day, literal and musical relatives The Radiators got a a lot of spin time as well.

My obsessions go in waves. At the moment, I've been rockin' to a guy (also with Subdudes connections) from Nashville, Pat McLaughlin. he's got a guitarist named Kenny Greenberg who absolutely tears it up, and is my current "nirvana" vote for electric guitar tone. This is honky tonk rock at it's absolute finest, and for whatever reason, completely satisfying to me right now. Simultaneously moving in a different direction, I can't get enough of Bill Frisell. Saw him live last week, and he is just captivating.

Another always close at hand is Haynes/Mule.

It's odd because as I've gotten older I've been getting harder/raw-er. 5-10 years ago I was all about the singer songwriter resurgence of Willy Porter/Amos Lee/Ray Lamontagne...but of late I need glowing tubes in the signal chain.

to the Jackson Browne fans, of which I am one, there is a young band (no longer "new", but just getting pretty mainstream) called Dawes, some of which you could actually mistake for new songs by a 25 yr old JB. Not entirely sure this is a good thing, it is SUCH a clear rip-off of his sound, but it is well written well crafted, and done with an abiding love and reverence for Browne's sound. this doesn't go for all their music thankfully.

@ Queequeg....where did you see Levon? Were you at his Chicago shows that March? he did a benefit weekend 1 month before his passing at my music School. I was fortunate to work both shows and shook his hand, along with Paul Barrere and Fred Tacket of Little Feat and Donald Fagen (Levon's son in law). Combined with Helms band of crack musicians, it was an outrageous weekend, and Helms was in great form. Belted "Ophelia" as his encore on both nights. I do mean Belted, and he sounded fantastic. So hard to believe he was as weak and ill as we now know he was. I considered that a gift from the music gods, to be able to meet and see him in this way.

The most lines the venue has EVER run on stage for a show...38 leads!!

"Keep a fire burnin in your eyes, pay attention to the open skies. You never know what will be coming down"
"I don't remember losing track of you. you were always dancing in and out of view. I musta thought you'd always
be around. Always keepin things real by playin the clown, now you're nowhere to be found."

Add the rest of the lyrics and you have songwriting skills that are only matched by a few.

I need to pull up some of these mentioned and check them out.

I haven't laid any money down on them...I liked one of their songs from a couple years back enough to keep up with them, and then heard their new album online. Like so many bands now....it's very "shallow", once you've heard a track or two...you've heard them all, it seems.

To be more accurate, it is superficially decent but the songs are pretty forgettable, to be charitable. There is a band called Middle Brother with the Dawes leader as one of the members that I liked a lot better. Sort of low-fi but you might want to check it out before Dawes.

(Of course I had seen him years ago with The Band.)
I worked a show at the Michigan Theater on March 19, 2012 in Ann Arbor, MI. It was just his band; no other luminaries, as in Chicago. Helm was weak, but animated on his drum throne and I believe Ophelia was the only song he soloed on, and indeed he gave it his all. He died exactly one month later.
I was listening to Donald Fagen solo work all weekend long. I didnt realize he married into the family.

Ah! Make that Wakenius  then but, yes, that's it. It looks like it needs a bath. It was especially noticeable with everyone in tuxes.  :laughin:

I don't know why but I'm sort of offended by string ends flopping around. It looks horrible to me and besides someone could lose an eye. If you're not going to trim them and, for the life of me, I don't know why you wouldn't at least spool them for crying out loud.
