hey, please throw some acoustic guitar listening recommendations my way :D

I just discovered Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska" album...seems very Neil Young inspired: no band, just stripped down guitar + harmonica....raw & real

been spinning it quite a bit. am not a huge Bruce devotee so never knew about it...will check out his other stuff too

what's everyone else into, lately?

another great one ( that I lost/lent & need to refind ) is a Garcia/Grisman collabo with a bunch of traditional kids songs on it....Jenny Jenkins, teddy bears picnic etc...real fun to listen to, esp if you have kids...or need to feed your "inner child", heh

Jakob Dylan..... "Seeing Things"

This link is to 2 different cds, but I still can't get enough of Seeing Things.

If you liked the Boss on Nebraska, his Ghost Of Tom Joad is also a killer CD with striped down instrumentatiion. ALos a relatively unknown artist out of Atlanta is Joe Mcguiness who has released two great Americana CD's. First one is called From These Seeds, and his newest is Tin Umbrella.

For singer/songwriter stuff, I'll throw Darrell Scott into the mix -- I've only recently become aware of his music and I am quite impressed. Here are a couple of examples:

Darrel Scott stuff was really nice. His pickin is pretty good but damn he was blessed with an EXTRODINARY voice! Lyrics damn good to:

Well, if I had a boat ya know what I would do
I'd float me and my family right down to Baton Rouge
I wouldn't work in no factory I'd live off the land
And live with in means of my own two hands

Now that is a pretty good verse eh?

jandrew--

Thanks for Darrell Scott.  I'll definitely be on the lookout for when he comes around, and it won't be long before I get some of his recorded music.

Yeah, the guy is pretty exceptional -- there's just a level of honesty that comes through his performances. If you hear him perform the same song two different ways, each one seems like the definitive version while you're listening to it.

Here's a good interview with him that someone recently posted on AGF:

and for fun, here's a different, extended version of River take me:

I'd recommend one of my favorite cds, put out by David Grisman called Tone Poets. It's a bunch of different musicians, guitarists and Mandolin players taking turns playing on a 1933 Martin OM-45  and 1922 Gibson F-5 mandolin (respectively). One disc is duets the other is solo performances alternating between guitar and mandolin. Great stuff with performers like David Bromberg, Sam Bush and Tony Rice.

awesome links, thx guys!!

Tone Poets...that sounds like a great concept, will hunt it down

If you liked their kids CD check out this one.... http://www.thebestofwebsite.com/Bands/Jerry_Garcia/Jerry_Garcia_and_David_Grisman.htm  by far their best release.

Seek out the first David Grisman Quintet release on Kaleidescope... featuring the incredible Tony Rice and Darol Anger. Great as Grisman's catalogue is, he has never bettered this release from the late 70's, really. wjile your at it seek out his Acoustic Disc label a great place to find excellent audio quality recordings of some of the best acoustic players to be found anywhere. Their compilations are great places to discover incredible music you may never have heard of.

Tony Rice, Tony Rice, TONY RICE!!!! Either the vocal work or the astonishing instrumental releases.

Doc Watson! If you haven't found him yet, you're welcome.

I recommend listening to Harvey Reid's, Solo Guitar Project 1 and Solo Guitar Project 2.  They're downloadable via Amazon (and other places) and he even plays a Larrivee guitar on a few of the songs.

wow just joined here, but these are great listens.

Chris Whitley is from another world , and sadly has returned there. But, for the acoustic stuff check out Weed, or Dirt Floor. All solo guitar , voice , and foot stomps with some of the most soulful ethereal vocals ever commited to tape.

unquestionably, my favorite recording of all time.  :thumb

Much good stuff. If you're going to talk about Darrell Scott, you should also mention Tim O'Brien. Among other fine albums, His Red On Blonde is a great collection of Dylan songs.
I'll also put in a good word for the Jackson Browne Solo Acoustic albums, volume 1 and 2. Superb!
