Title: Got Dogs......?
Post by: es-335 on December 21, 2008, 11:42:31 AM
I see a puppy thread.... and seems like there are a lot of us who have dogs...

So lets dedicate a thread to our dogs and SHOW OFF our dogs!! :humour:

Our standard poodle.
we adopted her through the poodle rescue! She was kenneled by the breeder.... for 3 years... and I guess she didn't qualify for showing standards. so then this other family adopted her, but she didn't get along with their munchicans and cat...
she still has some issues.. such not listening very well, a little bit of potty training issues, eating her own fur and obsession with food

wish i could talk to ceaser millan..  he seems to know dogs really well..

and the other dogs are Lhasa apso(the black one..) that my wife had before we got married &  Maltese, that I had rescued before I got married..

sh i could talk to ceaser millan..

I'll tell you what, if you ever need advice, PM or email me. Without getting intot the whole Cesar debate, i can assure you that he is not highly regarded (polite term) among people who train dogs or animal behavioralists. You also never see follow up and many of the things he suggests are outright dangerous for all involved. Ok, I have to stop myself now before this tunrs into a whole rant.

Anyhow, I'd be happy to assist and can refer you to many things that will make you and your dog's much happier than um, alternate methods. The Sitstay.com board has some great people on it.

Standard Poodles are wonderful, smart, soft dogs. They also are notorius for food allergies, which may explain some of her behaviors. It's will take a long time but she'll come around. Imagine what being kept in a pen for your first three years of life would do to you. Often these dogs will self mutilate and it becomes self rewarding over time. She may be a dog who benefits from meds.

Anyhow, sorry, I wrote a book, it's the dog persona taking over. All three of my dogs have serious behavior issues that if in the wrong home, with the wrong approach, would have made them dangerous dogs. But most days, I wouldn't trade them in. Most days... We are like the Island of Misfit Toys, well, except these Misfits have really big teeth.

ps. Pics when I can figure out where they are..

My dogs are awesome. Well behaved, listen to me, do what they are asked... I could only wish my children could learn from them (laff).

Seems like your dogs love the pool.   :bgrin:

I wish I could have a pool in the back yard, so in the winter I could skate!!

But as soon as we move back to BC, we should be no longer than 30minutes from a lake :D

Lida is a Leonberger. They are still considered rare.  She was tied to the door outside a pound in rural Ohio. I have a friend who has an Anatolian rescue and she was kind enough to get her pulled. We thought she was 10 months because at that time she was only 64 pounds and she should have been closer to 100. Turns out she was 18 months. Now she's about 84 which just squeks by the standard.

Her ears were so infected for so long the tissue was black and being eaten up. Three months later when she got healthy she turned out to be very dog aggressive, lol. Rescue dogs, the most expensive free dog ever. Here's the Leonberger info http://www.leonbergerclubofamerica.com/ (http://www.leonbergerclubofamerica.com/) she's basically a rug at home and used to have these anxiety attacks where she'd have to be cradled. No joke. She was only 75 pounds then, but still.

It's only outside she turns into Betty Davis. Months of training and a few thousand dollars later I can walk her with a minor scene as long as the dog is across the street. Golden's for some reason, really set her off. I've had a realllly steep learning curve with all the dogs.

i have better pics but for some reason loading them is such a hassle.

These guys (and girl) are like dogs temperament wise.  They follow you around and are totally loyal like dogs.  They come bounding over to you when you come in from work.  I guess they would run away if they saw a real dog though!!!

Yeah that's kind of a no-brainer huh ?  The shocking part is that they posed themselves that way on their own.  I just got out my camera and said "smile" and they got into formation.   If I'd tried to pose them it would never have worked.

Stubborn....yes.    But also loveable and clownlike.  I was told by a breeder once that pugs are one of the few breeds that were bred purely to be a companion and to amuse their owners.  They are lousy guard dogs;  they love everyone....    They are not hunters;  they prefer their food in a bowl.   They are no good as jogging companions;  just look at them.   They just love to sit and watch tv with you or sit at your feet and admire your guitar playing skills.  That's why I keep 'em around.   :bgrin:

Is he an English Lab? He's an good looking dog. There are way too many Labs around here bought by people who's Uncle frank had one that was great. But they forgot that Uncle Franks dog was like eleven. So too many down here get too fat and obnoxious due to lack of proper lifestyle. Too many conversations that start with:

Me. "When you chose a Lab, you did understand they are a working breed?"

Owner, who just doesn't get why his eight month old Lab is destroying the house. "Huh?"

I think I'd be apt to throw Kaleb a dog biscuit or two. Great name, btw.

Holly, He is an English Lab, They tend to be shorter and stocker. They are also not as high strung. The puppy phase lasts about 1 year as opposed to 3 or 4 with the American strain. Kaleb get his work out every day.

I love labs.
I know I have 3 dogs.. but when My wife and I move out of our current house and move into a home with a big yard, I wish to get a lab as an outside dog. maybe not.. my wife is against it....
Title: Re: Got Dogs......?
Post by: strawintogold on January 24, 2009, 11:55:01 AM
Well, I'm against outside dogs in general, but I'm not sure that's where her standing is,lol. Dogs are pack animals and IMO it's hard for them to be the only member outside, esp. when other dogs are in the home unless they are LGD (Livestock Guardian Dogs) and that's part of their job. Or some Northern breeds, but I think it would be hard on a Lab. But, again, it's my opinion. I'm a softy.

Part of that comes from being active in anti chaining laws, not that you'd chain the dog, I'm just giving a point of context. The other part is studying canine behaviors. People, as a rule don't spend much time outside, so the amount of interaction can be problematic. Hunting dogs are sometimes kenneled outside, but rarely alone. Not only is a dog in a pack happier, they are quieter. Nothing is sadder than a lonely keening hound dog.

Not that you asked,lol.

You just need a bigger house.

lol, agreed haha.

well, eventually, by the time I have grandkids..  I'd want to have a farm.. Have a couple cows, chickens and you know  :roll
I've seen a few outdoor huskies, GSDs and border collies.. so I thought why not have a lab as a outside dog.. But I guess I gotta rethink this through :)
Title: Re: Got Dogs......?
Post by: strawintogold on January 24, 2009, 12:21:36 PM
Well, right there you have your Northern Dog, a working GSD and a working Border Collie. All of whom have personalities that make them more suited. In fact, some, depending on drive lines, make lousy indoor pets and are happier outside. Labs, the 'average' lab has been bred so far out of the working line. They are made to be pets. This happens a lot. Either a breed is shot by careless and overbreeding, Goldens, GDS, Dobies, or the working line is bred out to make them happy homebodies.

Even a GSD or BC that has been dumbed down, will be miserable apart from the family.

For example, there is a reason the Secret Service almost exclusively uses Malinios now when for years they used GSD's and the Mal people are very guarded of the breed. Hopefull they won't go the way of the GSD. You would have to work very hard to make a Mali like a Golden but if there is a market well, you know.  A high drive Mal is a nightmare and miserable in a average pet home and one bred to be happy there would be a really crappy Mal.

I don't know if you've ever run across one, but a good working Mal, while smaller then a GSD, has scary intensity. They practically vibrate.

So, in short, you'd have to look hard for a Lab from working lines and then you'd have to accommodate the drive. Better to have your goofy, friendly, pet bred guy be just that.

I'm sure that's more than you ever wanted to know, lol. Breed dilution is of great interest to me. Some of the dogs I'd like to own someday are Akita's and Orvcharka's. The more primitive Mastiffs, ASD, etc. Dogs that I have no business owning now. There's nothing wrong with having a pet, but it's cruel to make a high drive dog out to be one. Everyone is miserable and the dog gets dumped.

Pyrenees suffer a lot, cute white and fluffy puppies that are not pet dogs and need a job. We have rescues full of them. ASD's, Huskies, same thing. Cute puppies, challenging adults.

When that day comes, I'd be happy to help however I can. I can also tell you what rescues to stay away from and how to check out a breeder (if you don't know) should you go that route.

wow, that was very informative! thanks holly.

I guess 3 dogs is enough lol for me  :bgrin:
My wife and I already have enough work to do with our 3 dogs! lol.
Probably we will have our first child... and a few years after that...  then another dog...
But when I need another dog.. I know who to contact  :nanadance

I like non-shedding(less sheddin I should say) dogs... sure it's takes a lot to groom them...
but whenever I visit my in-law's who have GSD x blue healer.... my eyes  go crazy itch every 5 minutes....

Golden Labradoodle, right?

Akitas are mean dogs.

GSD = German Shepherd Dog

Title: Re: Got Dogs......?
Post by: strawintogold on January 24, 2009, 02:14:12 PM
GSD German Shepard Dog

ASD Anatolian Shepard Dog

Don't get me started on the doodle thing...

Akita's aren't mean. They are just a differant type of dog. They can be dangerous when kept by idiots. All dogs can, to a degree, but some dogs have an aspect to their temperament  that requires responsible management. I have a GSD/Akita?something mix among the other two. Now that he is three he needs to be managed in certain environments and is no longer a busy dog park dog. But he's only dangerous if you are. The thing is, I learned early on that he looks to me to make that decision. You run into problems when you have the dog deciding who is and isn't a threat.

On the other end of the spectrum I have the Leo who is very dog aggressive. Pretty unheard of in the breed and a sign of bad breeding and lack of good care early on (she was 18 months when we got her).

Then there is Kinley, who is a year, a GSD/I think hound mix. He is a wonderful, wonderful dog that could have very well not been as he started to get very pushy once settled in (got him at six months), his temperament was why I didn't end up adopting him out and it gave me a valid excuse to keep him, lol. Although i don't recommend three dogs to anyone. He is a very sweet boy who needs consistant boundaries.

All that being said, there are certain breeds I think no one has any business owning unless they live on a mountain far away and are really astute dog owners. Some breeds have been kept around for reasons that are really no longer valid. But those are very few and quite rare anyway.

There is this idea that if we say a dog is aggressive by nature we are condoning dog fighting. Aggression, prey drive, play drive, ball drive are all parts of what makes a dog suited for what work. An aggresive temperament can be managed and diserable as long as it is a recognised part of the breed, if that makes sense. I would expect a GSD to be an intense animal who trians well in Schutzhund and uses that natural aggression appropriately. An aggresive Golden would be a severe tempermant fault. I prefer a dog with a bit of edge but my Leo is a PIA, it has no place in her breed or job. It's not suited for any other purpose than to act like a rabid Bette Davis.

Ok, I'll shut up now, see you got me all going on...

Here's our Toy Maltese, Bitsy.

One day when she's gone, she'll be remembered for many things, one in particular being the time she used the top of my Goodall as a launching pad to jump up on the couch. She is very light, but her little nails left a small rut in my top :crying: Fortunately it's so light that you have to hold it up to the light to really see it.

Being the anal guitar owner I am , I lost the love for just a few seconds, then realized it's only a guitar :winkin:

Jeff,

You mentioned the less shedding varieties. I would suggest a German Shorthaired Pointer or Weimaraner. However, that being said, both of these breeds are members of the Sporting Group and therefore need their brains to be stimulated. I too have dog allergies and will break out when my Bo licks my face (he loves to lick mommy's face). However, the less amount of shedding fur and the fact that they have a tighter coat, makes him a far better choice than my number one choice which is a husky  :crying:

Gosh that's pretty.

Lynda,

If you want a husky Bo is a good primer. Just add in never going off leash, being able to open cupboards, howling, high energy, fur blowing dogs who love to wander and are pushy as hell as teenagers. When I lived in AK they made great sled dogs. The only way I'd own one as a pet is if I lived in the North and had a sled.

Speaking of, have you thought of dog scootering? I ordered this http://www.pawtrek.ca/viewcategory.asp?catsel=55 (http://www.pawtrek.ca/viewcategory.asp?catsel=55) the Sidewalker (so much better than in front for lots of reasons) and the V Brake Scooter. i was his first customer. he's a transplanted Brit and we had ever so much fun trying to figure out Canada's tax and duty. Most of which contradicts itself.

i have the set up for two dogs but am not even close as you go FAST. Wear a helmet and wrist guards for sure. Plus he's in Canada! Wonderful man to deal with. It's a lot of fun and since it's on the side it's easier to maneuver past the sanctimonious 'real' cyclists who think walkers, hobby cyclists, children and the like aren't supposed to be on the path. Ever.

No offense to Jim and his brethren. It's a real issue down here. It seems the fancier the bike and jersey the least likely you are to get a 'passing' notice. We just skip the weekend.

As for me I have a big brass bell because it's polite, but also because it's the dog that is closer to the whatever, which can provide a bit of a startle.

Holly, you're way too much fun!

Unfortunately, with my asthma and allergies, my nose will not tolerate a husky. My GSP breeder started with huskies and still have them. Bo is wonderful and we plan to add a puppy sibling for him in the next six months or so. Have to move to the new house and get Bo acclimated to it before I even think about bringing another dog home.

They are good family dogs, smart, good looking, watch the prey drive.  Which is awesome if you have vermin, rabbits or moles. Dedicated digging places are great fun for terriers as well. Well, and kids too. Great thing about dogs and sandboxes is that whole cat problem is non existent.

Incidentally, i don't mean to sound like I'm , uh, dogging you. I'm always curious as to what attracts people to what particular breed. If I thought it was a terrible choice, I'd PM you, lol.

I have never been attracted to Terriers, a little too manic for me with Jacks being way at the bottom of my list. Now there's a dog worthy of a PM. Poor guys are rarely matched well and I'm convinced the one on Frasier was stuffed to the gills with Benydryl. They are a dedicated breed, for sure.

holly, you dont sound like you are dogging me lol. no worries:)

Our rescued std poodle is already challenging enough for me and my wife
Still having a hard time with house breaking... She is usually good... But she loves to eat her own poop... so house breaking is a bit challenging... say we eat dinner in the kitchen for 10-15 minutes... she'd go into the living room and poop and eat it... and no evidence..  but we can smell it.. when we come back to the living room.. other than that... we love our std poodle :) terrific dog..

I don't know why people who want those "doodles" just don't go for a std. poodle... std. poodles are really terrific dogs.. :)

Have you tried adversives added to her food? This is easily addressed/managed by putting her in her crate when you aren't there to watch her. Dogs will rarely soil a crate. There is also a school of thought that says it's nutrional but given her history of being kenneled I'd imagine it started out of boredom and because habit.

I used to have airedales. Cool dogs. Gave one of our pups to mys sister and now she's had nothing but airedales for almost twenty years....usually two at a time. Love 'em. One of our litters financed a trip to Jamaica for my wife and me back in the late 70's.

Ended up switching to boxers when my kids were babies...they seemed much more suited to treatment that a toddler can dish out.

Seeing all these great pictures of your dogs makes me long to have one again, but alas, the place i live does not allow them.
Dogs are the best manifestation of unconditional love that I know of on this earth. I find myself saying that quite a bit, so I know that at least I must believe it and know it to be true; as true as anything I can know. No matter how they feel, or what may have happened to them five minutes ago, when you walk through that door, they are so darn happy to see you that they almost cannot contain themselves. And we love them right back for it. Not for their searing intellect, stunning good looks, or their massive bank portfolio. They have earned their place in this world, in our homes and in our hearts.

Have you considered voluntering at your local shelter? It can be heartbreaking at times but you are giving  a dog a chance to live by making it more adoptable. And yeah, i agree with the everything you said and the dog's feelings in regard to Clapton. Do they have one like that for Paul McCartney?

I'm sticking with Aussie Merle.

Here's an ACD http://www.dogslife.com.au/__data/page/5948/australian_cattle_dog2.jpg (http://www.dogslife.com.au/__data/page/5948/australian_cattle_dog2.jpg) they are short, shaped like a barrel and sort of squat. Prick eared. Shorter muzzle.

Aussie Merle http://www.ashgi.org/color/blue_merles.htm (http://www.ashgi.org/color/blue_merles.htm) your dog has a nice sloped stop as well and fine bones. No prick eared parent's, you can tell by the location of the ears. Eye set is Aussie.

I know, you are like, shut up it's MY dog. I can't help it....rofl. Sorry. Hoped I haven't been to irritating. You should ignore me, I'm just a little dog, uh, focused. Breed ID is part of what I do for rescues. But it's a lot harder to tell from a photo and I could be totally wrong. If you were a rescue I'd ask for more photos, so take it with a grain of obsessive salt.

Although it was awesome to spot a fuzzy Bull Mastiff and get him to a Mastiff rescue.

Unfortunately we had to take are boy in yesterday to have him put to sleep. It was a very traumatic experience, we loved him so much.

He had been getting weaker for the last year, loosing all the muscle mass at his hips and his back.  For the last week he was unable to control his bladder through the night, then finally that turned into him leaking all the time.

He was on several med's for his pain but he just didn't have the strength to get up anymore without help.  He could make the two stairs to go in and out once he was up.  And he would try his best to be spunky, grab his bone a swing his head back and forth while trying to do his little dance.  But alas, we had to do what was best for him and relieve him of the pain he so valiantly tried to tuff out.

Rest in Peace my buddy Rambo.

Here are a couple pictures of him last 4th of July.

Oh I am so sorry. What a noble looking fellow he was. I can't give you all that Rainbow Bridge stuff because I know it doesn't do a damn thing.  All three of my dogs are very close in age, 3, 3 and 1.5 and although I've told them they can't get old and die, I can't bear to imagine any of it.

It's a cruel twist that the gift we give them that means the most, is the one that rips our heart out.  That's all I can say without totally losing it. It's a small comfort but understand that we who love our dogs know how you feel and the depth of your loss resonates in us all.

Rest in peace Rambo.

I've not been able to talk about it, but this is my eulogy for Sweetie The Dog, 1994-2009. I had to have her put to sleep on January 2nd. It was the hardest thing I've ever done is my life. But 2008 wasn't a good year for her and she was barely able to walk the last few months. Sweetie was my constant companion for most of the last 10 years as I worked out of a home office until I retired in 2007. She was a lab-dalmation mix, short tempered with other dogs until she got to know them very well, but gentle with people.

Sweetie in better days....

Randy,

That's a long life for a big dog. An extraordinarily long life. While the life expectancy for Leo's is nine years, I'm hoping since Lida is on the small side it will be as longer, and longer still for my other two boys.  I'm sorry to hear Sweetie passed, but thankful she was with you as long as she was.

I'm not a believer in time healing much of anything, not a great loss, anyhow, but like I told Roger it is a shared loss and one we understand. Its any easy covenant to enter into, all that warmth and sheer inhibited joy at just being. Dogs are living examples of God's work that we can embrace, something tangible at the end of the day.

I'm not sure loss gets better, but I've been led to believe it gets easier and I hope your heart is eased soon.

I am sooo sorry, he was such a handsome boy.You will have many wonderful memories of his time with you.  We went throught a rough time a few years ago with four old dogs. We lost them all in a short time period. I was thinking we would never have another dog... losing them was too painful!  We realized fairly soon that the biggest compliment to them was  to not be able to live without another one... or two :) Enter LusaLu and Draco! When my wife called in and asked for a quote, she was told $58 + tax, then she told them the dog has so much hair and some of it was matted and the quote didn't change..
When we dropped her off at the groomer's, they didn't say anything about her hair being matted or anything :?
I'd understand if my dog had a behaviour problem and it was hard to work with her.. but my she is so well behaved.. so was told by the groomer... well.. I know how hard it is to groom a dog..(It took me and my wife to groom the small ones... and it took hours...)

Unfortunately we had to take are boy in yesterday to have him put to sleep. It was a very traumatic experience, we loved him so much.

He had been getting weaker for the last year, loosing all the muscle mass at his hips and his back.

Rest in Peace my buddy Rambo.

Roger, I am going through this now. My all time fav dog, "Gump" is blind , almost deaf and is getting weaker. But he can hear my whistle and still moves around by smell and touch. He has about a half acre to range around in and I got him a young female for company (and for a place for my hearts feelings to go when he does die)
He got out about a year and a half ago or so and I was so bothered that he might be hit by a car that I prayed harder than I had prayed for anything in a long time, that I could find him. Which of course I did. But I was embarrassed a little that I had prayed so hard for my dog. So I knew right then, that I had to get another one or my heart would be crushed too much when Gump did die.
He still enjoys life and I will not put him down until I know he is in great pain.   Anyway thanks for sharing about Rambo. Guitars can't put their big old heads on your leg and look up in your eyes and draw out your pain. But we can play a song about them.  OK I'm ramblin. I'll post a pic of Gump later.

Here is a pic of Gump awhile back. He stays outside mostly. He only likes to come in to play with kids or get away from thunder or fire crackers. I'll find more later. All the kids and Grandkids love Gump. I have a funny story to share later also, about when he.... well I'll tell it all at once.

Thank you everyone for your kind words.

We have nothing but the fondest memories of Rambo, he was just such a huge part of our lives.

My wife had him for 13 years and I met her 7 years ago. It was love at first sight, I'm talkin' bout me and Rambo now, I married the wife for the dog  :humour:  Really though, I had never had a dog before except for about a month when I was 12. My parents gave the dog back because it destroyed things. So me and Rambo were pals from the start.

I remember the first time I came to my wife's house to take her out to dinner I was wearing black slacks.  I sat down on one of the kitchen chairs while she did her last minute primping. Rambo is so inquisitive when people come in the house, he loves company. So I'm sitting there petting him as he leans into my legs, well we all know dogs shed but some the hair just seems to fly out. The wife was so embarrassed and I thought it was hilarious.

When I moved in, every day when I came home from work I would take him outside and brush him.  He loved to be brushed more than anything. That started are deep friendship, he truly was my best friend, besides my wife of course.

Randy, I'm so sorry to hear about Sweetie The Dog. And your right about it being the hardest thing, you know in your heart that the time is coming but you just can't ever prepare yourself for what your going to feel.  I know you have your own fond memories and thinking of them helps you through.  Prayers to you brother.

Danny, I feel for you buddy. Thats what makes it so hard, they hang in there and just keep giving it everything they got because they have to be there for you.  Finally it comes down to you being there for them, and not letting them suffer. Rambo was a very proud dog, he held his head high. And you could tell he was embarrassed when he had an accident, and the last day he had no control left. We knew he didn't want to go on like that, it was just the right thing to do.  It was actually kind of nice that it happened while my step son was home on leave before going to Japan for 6 months. Rambo had the three of us with him in the end.
Just enjoy every last day with Gump, you will know when it is time.  And we will be here for you.

Roger,

I'm so sorry for the loss of your dog. He looked like such a sweetie. Just reading your post brought tears to my eyes. Take good care.

I am very sorry for the loss of your Sweetie. I know how rough it is to go through that process. I am dreading when it happens to my Bo. I only hope it will be many years yet. He turned three on Christmas day.

Roger, and Lynda and Danny and all, Thanks for the words.  Danny, just let Gump know you love him. Dogs are great, and are what make us civilzed people, I believe.

Sweetie The Dog was one of a litter of eight puppies, free to good home. The mother was a pure bred dalmation which the owner had wanted to breed for registered pups, but a neighbor's lab mix made it over the fence first to father the litter. When the woman who advertised the free puppies opened the pen gate, all the puppies made a dive for the mother dog except one pup who ran out the gate and around my legs. That was Sweetie, she chose me, not the other way around. The good stories just go on and on. But Sweetie travelled with me for a number of years while I was shooting competition matches on weekends, And she stayed under my chair in my office while I worked during the week. Sweetie would sit next to me when I played guitar at open mics and at jams. She was almost 15 years old, and had been in increasingly bad health for several years, the worst problem of which was her rear legs becoming weak to the point where she couldn't walk. Her spirit was still good thru all this though. But it was time to end the ordeal that life had become for her.

I got a new pup Strength 4 years ago, which Sweetie helped pick out from another litter of free-to-good-home puppies.

Here are the two of them in the front yard about 3 years ago.

speaking of dog baths. In the process of working thru skin and hair problems with a dog, I discovered a medicated shampoo that seems far superior to many others I tried, and i tried many. Specifically KetoChlor which contains both an anti-fungal and antiseptic. It requires a prescription, but its worth the trouble if your dog needs it.

I also found something EXTREMELY helpful if you dog ever breaks out with mange. My old dog Gump did last summer do to his immune system being low (all dogs have mange on them, but healthy ones resist it).  I found a bath technique that cured him. He is doing very well now. But he really looked bad for a few months. Lost lots of hair etc. Now all his hair is filled out and he is very spry, all things considered.
If anyone needs this recipe I'll post it later.  Danny

We have to do that with the 'C' word.....'c-h-i-c-k-e-n'. If we say it out loud she thinks it's dinnertime and gets all excited. Also the 'W' word....'w-a-l-k'. If we make the mistake of saying that out loud, we are then obligated to, whether we want to or not

Spring is just about here in Georgia. The  crocus are starting to bloom. We're due for a couple early morning frosts the next couple days, and hopefully that is the end of winter. Strength got a couple of long walks today, and he's ready for warmer weather.

Although it was awesome to spot a fuzzy Bull Mastiff and get him to a Mastiff rescue.

holly

I missed this when you posted it....

Interesting thoughts though.  The shelter we got him from had him listed as an Aussie, but then we took him to the vet a week later and they said ACD.  I'll see if I can find some other pictures to see what you think.

Found some pics:

Dude, that's an Aussie. My vet thinks one of my dogs is a Sight Hound mix. I adore him, he's incredible and I trust him completely but he can't ID dogs. In fact, my expirernce has been vets are the worst at it. rescues nornally do a good job. She may not be full, it's hard to tell but I'd bet dollars to donuts at least one parent was full Aussie. The look in the eye is unmistakable, the bone structure, eyeset and muzzle stop are not ACD by a long shot. Not to mention she's way too tall to be an ACD. They are also a lot rarer than people think. I have seen two in 'real' life and I see a lot of dogs.

Look at sopme pics of ACDs and you'll see what I mean. They are like barrels on legs. They have short harsh coats. Your pup doesn't have prick ear parents on either end. ACD's have prick ears. Keep in mind that the Aussie's you see on that site are almost all show quality. So your pup won't be as fluffly or whatever. She really looks like fun.

Danny,

How is Gump taking the pup?
He sniffed her about 10 seconds, snorted and walked away. He is just in his own world, but he is healthy and still does his security rounds in the back yard. I think you know he can't hardly see a thing and only can hear me whistle or bang his metal food dish. He does still know me readily and likes a few pats on the head, but then he just likes to be left alone.
It will be interesting in the next few weeks as little bandit grows and begins to get more active, then Gump may stick a big paw on her head like he did to our chihuahua one time.

Cool pup Dan.
Funny how humans are breed specific, I'll always have Australian Shepherds as part of our dog pack.

Same here - aussies have the best blend of intelligence, personalilty, and intution.  The perfect dog as far as my wife and I are concerned.

Have you posted pics of your's? And a Aussie Shepard is actually an American breed dog, but mine is a Aussie Cattle dog, ie. blue heeler. Which is part Dingo, bull terrier, dalmation and way back there some kind of smooth collie.
So are y'all referring to the American Aussie Shepard or the Aussie cowdog? They both are fine breeds, just different blood lines.

Got all three of my time consumers - dogs, law, and guitar.  That's Bandit, the Miniature Australian Shepherd, and Cle'lie, the tri-color Aussie.

This was the pic I posted a while back (I should post a few more).

Yes, Australian Shepherds are indeed one of the fewer purely American breeds, an auxiliary reason why we like the breed as well.  No, we are not canine xenophobes, it's just one more quality about them; like boston terriers.

Both are fine breeds - Cattle dogs are wonderful.

Those are nice looking dogs, I'd have an Aussie Shepard any day.
I just have four right now, so I think my lil Bandit will be it for a while.

Here is Karla, now approaching 5 months of age.  Somewhere north of 50#
She is doing well in her basic obedience class and will later get the intermediate course.  She might be trained as a therapy dog later, if she passes the temperment test.
Quite a set of lungs on this canine.

Getting a 5mo old pup to stay still for a picture can sometimes be a task. Chasing a ball is a lot more fun.

Holly, it sounds like you know the breed!  Karla can be a hellion if we don't get her out for walks enough.  Dang smart as well.  We're glad she has figured out that if she wants to get along with the two cats that she has to be gentle with them.  They're almost buds now.  But when she wants to romp they want nothing to do with her, for some reason...   :whistling:

I'm having a bit of a hard time today. I am 57 years old, but the kid from the country is still in me and is in a bit of pain. I'm not looking for sympathy or attention. Just need to share what's going on today.
My old dog "Gump" died today, he didn't come up for breakfast, so I went looking for him...
He was over 14 years old and the BEST dog I have ever had. He's been going down hill for a little over a year now, so I knew it was coming. In the end that didn't matter. It's hard to lose a friend as loyal as Gump was.

We buried him on a large hill country ranch, in a very dignified place, wrapped in his favorite blanket. The ranch is owned by someone so famous that I can't say who, just that there is a big connection to music here. I so appreciate the favor shown to me to allow Gump to be buried there. It makes it a little easier to remember the last thing I saw Gump do was his ''security patrol" of the back yard, and the last words I told him were "I love you Gump"

For those of you who understand a country boy and his dog, thanks for just reading this. For those who don't care for these kind of posts, I truly am sorry; But right now I need to let this out of me.

Below is the last picture of Gump and I, he was not doing very good. And I was not happy.

Danny, sorry for your loss. I remember the times that you had mentioned him, & I'm sure he'll be dearly missed. :+1:

Here's my pooch, Taz, about a month after we got him He weighed about 38lbs. originally, put on a little more here, is now about 55-60lbs. We saved him from a shelter, ready to be put down. He looks happy now, seing how he has all the food & love he wants! Sometimes, it seems like it's the food that's all he wants! He needs Jenny Craig now!
Again, Danny, my condolonces. Nothing like a man & his dog.
     Jeff
And I apologize for his eyes, having alergies. Should have wiped them for those eating!

So sorry to hear about Gump. He gave you a great gift, sparing you that awful trip to the vet we all to often have to make. I have discussed it with my three and they have all agreed not to die or get old or sick. It's scary to think about because they are so close in age.

So while I'm not going through what you are now, I break down everytime I even consider the loss of my dogs. So I get it. I'm grateful you have youe Cattle Dog, if ever a dog was made to cheer one up, that's the kind.

I really have been helped by all your thoughts, thank you all kindly.

Here are some pics of my two outside dogs. Bubba is 4 or so and we got her from a ranch, we believe she is part coyote. (coydog)
The other is the little ACD blue healer, "Bandit" she has really grown in the last 2 months. And yes Holly she is a playful and extremely affectionate dog.
Neither can replace Gump, but they both have a space that is growing in size in my heart.

Morrow22 and dependan (Danny), condolences to you both on the loss of Tucker and Gump, respectively.  Great looking dogs!

--------------------------------------------------

We're still on the other side of the animal curve, although one of our cats, Licorice, is really old (over 16 years, I think) and sleeping most of the time.

Below, Orion and Karla are protecting the F-III.  Orion is too good at catching and eating hummingbirds.  He needs to get the rats and mice at night.  Karla is almost 90# now and will be 9 months old in a couple of weeks.  She is just the sweetest dog you can imagine on our walks, greeting each person and wanting love.  Back at home she reverts to a puppy and wants to play (rough).  Outside she puts on a halo.

What's better, Dogs or Cats? My opinion: When I pull out my Larrivee to play and sing, the cat sulks upstairs with her ears back and the puppy lays down at my feet...what do you think my vote is?

Switching to cats for a moment, here is Orion tonight.  He climbed in while I was playing.  He fell asleep, so my playing must have been very soothing to his impatient soul.   :humour:

Here's Pepper, a 1 y.o. stray we rescued, now 9 and a bit calmer. Probably mostly Border Collie, but too long legged - so something else there too - one of the hunting breeds probably . Very active - thought we'd have to get him a herd of sheep when he was young to keep him out of trouble.

The cost of the chip-ID implants seems to have come way down. The local humane society will implant them for only $20 here where I live. I had my vet implant one during my dog's previous physical. He likes to run if given the chance, although he usually comes home after a brief time. If he runs somewhere and gets lost and loses his collar, at least the chip gives him one more chance for survival.

Last August my wife came home with a stray dog that had been dumped out at her parents farm . She was a nice little dog so we kept her.   She was pregnant and gave us 5 little male pups a month later.    She looks exactly like the white dog in your photo.
Even the slightly fuzzy-looking tail is the same.   What kind of dog do you think that is ?   We gave away all the pups except one.  The one we kept looks a lot like a doxie in shape and color.

Hey Tuffy,

It's great that you took home a stray!  Unlike my kids, rescued dogs really appreciate being provided for

The white dog is a pitbull mix.  Most people seem to think it is PB & Lab although that's just guesses.  Where it gets interesting is that there are a lot of dogs people call "pit bulls", I'm thinking she is part American Bulldog.  SHe is short for a PB though, stubby little legs.

I was worried at first about having a PB mix.  My kids are older but I was worried about the other dogs.    But Daisy Mae is very submissive and gets bullied by smaller dogs if anything.  Not a mean bone in her body!

Wow, my dog Porter looks almost identical to Angus. I'll have to post a shot or two of him this weekend.

I really lucked out again Gus is an easy to train Aussie. Week one done with the basics (sit, no, bad, potty trained) tonight is the worst for me- kennel training- I have taught other dogs to use a kennel and never made them use it but even though I really don't like it I'm going to try it again anyway. Gus is the first Aussie I have owned who can howl so looks like earplugs and angry neighbors for a couple of days!

This is what I did after going to work all week and meeting lots of new people.

his is a picture of Lily, my Viszla, who I had to put down just before Christmas last year due to bone cancer. I treated her holistically and with a pain killer. I kept alive a year and a half past the 2 month death sentence she was given by regular vet! The pictures were in Aug and Nov last year.

I travelled down to Idaho in 2004, from Vancouver Island, to pick her up at a Viszla Rescue center. She was 5. I competed for years in Obedience and confirmation, with Vizsla's and Papillons. This is my first year ever without a dog! I miss her.

My Boy Musgy!  Love this guy to bits, he is 9 now and still thinks he is a puppy - not to mention he thinks he is about the size of a boxer!!!  He is my biggest fan, and will stop what ever he is doing to listen to me attempt to play some random tune - more then I can say for my human friends  :humour:

Here is my Moose (Bernese Mountain Dog), who I had to put down in Feb. this year. Very difficult. Neither the wife, kids nor I were dealing well without him so we are getting a puppy soon. It'll be good having another one here but different as well. Hang in there and maybe another one in time...

Gump died almost a year ago now. He is still in my heart and in my conversations. Everyone who met him liked him. We in the family loved him. And he loved us all. After having a pet like this for 13-14 years you can never actually replace them.
But I did get a ranch dog to be a companion for Gump in his last years. I named her Bubba. She didn't win my heart over like Gump did, but she has slowly taken her own place in the family and in all our hearts. It took about two years I guess or maybe a year and a half, but she has become the family dog and we all love her.
I tried a puppy as well but that was not a correct match for us and the pup has moved from Texas to South Dakota and is in a good home there.

I tried singing a little tune about Gump a few days ago and just stopped and wept. I guess I am just saying it takes time for those of us who love animals and make the bond with them that doesn't seem to be broken, even after they are gone. They aren't people but they sure are family and at times a better friend.

I do hope your new puppy is a special pet and can get in your heart as Moose has.

Last year was a trying year for my wife and I and our dogs. We have Rhymer and Seager, black labs and brothers. In April last year Rhymer was diagnosed by a local vet with a malignant thyroid tumor that had metasticized a little to his lungs and was given 3 - 6 months to live. We refused to give up and took him to Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital. He had surgery to remove the tumor, went on Chemotherapy and the current prognosis is that he will be with us for years. His response to the Chemo has even amazed the Oncologists at Ohio State. At this point you would never know that there was a thing wrong with him.

His brother Seager tore his ACL last fall and had surgery to repair it in October. It was a long haul to recovery, and hell on Seager since he is the jock in the family. He is now back to running like a rocket and has renewed his love affair with the tennis ball.

Bottom line is we love our boys and are overcome with joy with how things have turned out for them, just wish we had doggie health insurance.

Hey Steve, that's a great story about your dogs recovering.  I'm sure that you cherish every day with them.

Danny:  I feel for you about Gump because I'm going through the same thing.  We had to put our Big Feller Henry to sleep last June, he was a 13 year old 100 lb lab mix.  There's a hole in my heart that time just won't fill, shedding a tear right now thinking of him.  He was one of those dogs that everybody, human or canine, loved.

Among our dogs is a German Short-hair Pointer who uses her paws to touch all the time. She touched my new 00-03 and left an one inch 'impression.' Didn't break the finish, but when the light catches it, there it is - perpendicular to the grain.

She loves me...

We just picked up our new rescue dog, his name is Winston. He is a ACD somewhere between 6 and 9 months old. The pic's aren't the best but we just got him last night and when I went to take pictures today my batteries were dead, by the time they were charged it was getting dark.
BTW, he is very well behaved and smart (he didn't get that from me).

Well, we picked up our new Berner puppy on Saturday; here she is. We named her Mabel and we are all getting used to each other. The kids really are into her and are helping out quite a bit--we'll see how long that lasts. She's got quite a lot of energy and that is an adjustment for us but she is fun and lovable.

Where does it come from?
Now I understand Gus' herding instincts his sire is and is from herding stock he zig zags when he is in front, he grabs ankles when he is behind, he lays his chin on my other dogs necks to make them stay. He understands almost all commands with no trouble but...
last Friday he walked in to the kitchen and grabbed a paper shopping bag carried it to the middle of the backyard and dropped it on its side, walked to the fence, turned around and ran as fast as he possibly could and jumped on the shopping bag sliding across the lawn he did this until the shopping bag wouldn't slide anymore.

Do you think he might be sneaking out of his kennel and watching "Animal Planet" in the middle of the night?

How big is Gus now - doubled again ?
Old saying about herding dogs - "Gotta keep them busy or they will find something to do, and you won't like it" .
My Border C. something cross/stray is now 10 and a bit calmer finally.

I'm not sure I'll be weighing him when he gets his final shots on Thursday over 25 maybe 30.
As you can see above your post my 12 year old has mellowed too much.
Gus is a stuffed dog toy serial killer at home but is a perfect gentelman in public. I once told him to sit/wait in my office and forgot just to come back quite a while later to find him in the same spot sitting-then again he could have been messin with me.

There are a lot of very touching stories here. In January we lost our Siberian Husky a day before his 12th birthday. It was, and still is, really difficult. A couple of months ago we adopted a Border Collie from a rescue. He's 8 months old now and is firmly part of the family. He has his moments but, overall, he's great. He went with us on our road trip from California to Nova Scotia and back and did very well -- although he was going a little stir crazy at the end.

37 lbs. today- remember those fifties black and white movies where things were exposed to radiation they became HUGE! That's our not so little guy.

Cool dogs Border Collies I just don't have the energy- luckily he is young enough to train and a very good looking too. A friend got a Border Collie right after we got Joey and he lost 40 lbs the first year and a half he owned her.

Gump was a Border Collie stray that I found in the middle of a busy hiway when he was about 6 months old. Just read about him above if you want. Bottom line is he was the best dang dawg this ole country boy ever had. Still hard to talk much about him.

Border Collies are great dogs. And that Berner puppy is so cute.

We gave our coydog Bubba a bath today and vaccine and flea meds. Now she needs a trip to the Vet for Rabies booster and heart worm medicine. She's no Gump but she fits in the family quite well.
We have some more animals now but I'll tell about them later.

Lost our little 10-year-old Scottie mix the 6th of May. The lupus finally won. He was a character and we miss him. (I still haven't put his kennel/bed/dish away). It was the day before we picked up our daughter from her first year of college. She didn't get to say goodbye. What a horrible day!

We have a curly-coated retriever who is 7. He is big and smart and very sweet. He's such a goofball. I think he clowns around just to get us to laugh. He was lost for awhile after Arthur died, but seems to be enjoying being an only dog now. We couldn't take Arthur for car rides much, now Bug thinks every time we go out the door he's going for a ride. He is an excellent car dog.

There is a new thing that combines agility and herding but I can't remember what the training is called. I'm going to try Gus after he gets snipped.

Over 90 degrees in Seattle yesterday and around 90 today.  That's HOT for this town.

Karla is now over 1 1/2 years old and weighs in at 102#, about right according to the vet.

She beat the heat by going in the basement, sleeping in the bathtub (also her idea), and soaking up some breeze from her favorite fan:

New dog at Randy's house, introducing Filly the Puppy.

She's a 12 week old Pyrenees mix. I expect she'll be a 90 lb dog when fully mature. Last night was her first time away from her mother and litter mates, so she was lonesome. But very friendly and intelligent. She'll be a great dog.

The replies are appreciated. Some may know my Dad passed away last Monday and now Zoe is missing.
For those who have pets and love them, you know they are part of your family. Zoe is the most pleasant Chihuahua I have ever seen. She rarely ever barked and was well trained. She fit our family perfectly.

The fact she wouldn't bark much is why we didn't realize that she was missing for about two hours. She just had a bath and loves it after she's dried off and was very energetic. She was out front with me and I lost track of her. She never came back to the garage end of the house where I was and never barked at the front door for someone else to let her in. We have had her about five years and just trusted her a lot. Since she was a quite/patient dog she would just wait at the door.
A neighbor did see her walking towards our house in the street. Our street dead ends into a longhorn cattle ranch and there are not many homes on this short street. We have a very large lot as well as the other homes and ours backs up to a creek. She was so small and cute I think someone just picked her up and took her away.
Zoe loved people and would approach them and let them pick her up. She hated tall grass so I seriously doubt she wandered into the ranch or creek area. Though we went to the ranch and have looked all around here. My thoughts are someone has her and will keep her. Sadly some people will try to increase their happiness at the sadness of others.

My son and I have posted on the two sites used in Austin the most and I am going to make a large sign and posters right now.

We have to hope someone will do the right thing and give her back to us.

Here is one pic I just took. She is dozing off but opened her eyes for a second. The other pic is from a month ago and gives a better Idea of how small she is.

Hi Danny,

I don't normally follow this thread because my bizarre lifestyle doesn't permit having dogs. Perhaps in quieter days I will have one or two.

It sounds like it has been a really rough month for you and I wish you and your family well.

I am glad for you, Bonnie, and Zoe.

ST

PS (mini rant... "But the parents finally convinced her." I don't understand why parents have to convince children to do the right thing. Sure, it's a learning/teaching opportunity, but I don't think this was a situation that should have been open to negotiation. I think that the parents could have modelled the correct behaviour and let the child learn from that).

Please - don't let this little comment from me derail the thread or distract from the joy of sharing about dogs.

I didn't know this thread existed untill now, and I haven't the time to read all 15 pages, so I'm a bit behind. (I've been called worse  :winkin: )

This is Buck Trails and he likes to sing along. He's the tenor.

I guess my wife and I are suckers for abandoned and homeless dogs.      We started with one pug and soon rescued two more who were not wanted by their owners.     First picture shows Tuffy, Daisy and Maddy;  the pugs

Then we rescued Bella, a very nice little Boston Terrier
Then came Buster the Boxer
Then my wife came home from a visit at her parents farm and brought back an abandoned little mixed breed who was pregnant.    A month later we had 5 little male puppies on our hands.   We've adopted out all but one of the pups.  We kept Bosco 'cause I just couldn't give him up.  We also kept the mom.   One of the pugs died last year.  She was 14 years old and we are still grieving over Daisy.   Buster found a permanent home with a friend.    My daughter has Bella now.   My other daughter took one of the pups and bribed one of her students with the promise of an "A" in English if she'd take a couple of the other puppies. (or so she says, the student was a straight A student anyhow)  A co-worker of mine took the last of the pups, thankfully.   We seem to have a revolving doggie door around here.

Here's the gang

I forgot about this thread!  Bosco looks like a cool little guy, I didn't realize you had so many dogs Lynn.  I thought it was just the pugs.

broKen,

Buck Trails looks like he knows what he's doing, you 'cats' should start a band.  Maybe the Acoustic Dogs for a name.

Randy they are fine looking dogs. Filly looks like an offspring of my dog Gump for sure.

My G-son and I picked up this stray Beagle after a meeting on Sunday as we were driving home. He really wants to keep her and named her Shiloh. We gave her a bath and she fits right in our home. ( she loves the couch) I put up postings in Lost and Found and Pets on Craigslist. No collar at all and she looks like she may have just had a litter. Fireworks are a big cause of animal loss and I imagine that is when she ran away from home.

I'll take her to the animal shelter to see if the owners try and find her there next. Meanwhile she is at home and we enjoy her pleasant company.

Those pictures were taken by my step son the Marine, he bought that camera in Japan when he was stationed there and I think he paid a few thousand for it. He has always taken remarkable pictures even with his first Sony digital when he was in high school.

Here are a couple pictures from my camera with me behind the button, big difference.
Size really doesn't matter to Winston either. Thats his pal Jake from up north, next summer Jake will be towering over Winston.

We've had three Great Danes, and they've all been big babies - they'll roar at the door when someone knocks and then run to get a stuffed teddy bear to present to the visitor.  Intimidating, but really harmless.

That big fellow gets very nervous if he doesn't get some "lap time" with me for a bit every day....  :doh

I have had little close encounters with Great Danes, but an acquaintance told me they had to have their GD destroyed for the aggressive behavior exhibited by it.

Well, shoot, there's just no easy way to say this.   It is with a heavy heart that I am reporting the passing of my best friend for the past 13 years.   When I joined the forum I chose the name Tuffythepug in honor of my buddy Tuffy.    We've had him since he was a pup and we were with him as he drew his last breath on Monday morning after declining health over the past several months.   He will forever be remembered as a faithful companion and one of the best dogs a person could hope to know.

Newcomers probably won't take much notice of this but my forum friends who have gotten to know me here will understand how devastating this is to our family.

Please join me in taking a moment to remember this little guy.
He never met anyone who he didn't take a liking to.  He would have been a terrible guard dog but he was the best companion you could every hope for.

scoutsteffLV,
Yeah, I know that it's going to take a long, long time for us to get over this loss.  We are trying hard to focus on all the fun he brought into our lives rather than dwell on the hole left in our hearts.

Your Aerdales are great looking dogs.    We have a good friend who has one and we just love her.    We had thought about getting one ourselves but we just don't have a big enough yard or enough energy to keep up with a large dog.

Don't know what else to say Lynn, sorry I don't have better words to console you. Tuffy was a good dog and well loved. He had the best life a dog could have and I'm glad I got to see him.

Lynn,
So sorry to hear that Tuffy has passed, I know exactly what you and your family are going through. It's hard to lose your best friend.  It took us 2 years before we got another dog but just this morning I said to my wife, maybe Rambo was reincarnated in Winston. He just seems to be a lot like him in spirit.  Hang in there, every day gets a little easier as you remember all the good times you spent together. And remember, as long as you hang around this forum Tuffy's name will never be forgotten.

RIP Tuffy

A little puppy humor.....

A burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables when a voice in the dark said, 'Jesus knows you're here.'

He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze.

When he heard nothing more, after a bit, he shook his head and continued. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard 'Jesus is watching you.'

Freaked out, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice.

Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot.

'Did you say that?' he hissed at the parrot.

'Yep', the parrot confessed, then squawked, 'I'm just trying to warn you that he is watching you.'

The burglar relaxed. 'Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you ?'

'Moses,' replied the bird.

'Moses?' the burglar laughed. 'What kind of people would name a bird Moses?'

'The kind of people that would name a Rottweiler Jesus.'

Lynn,
I, too, missed the original post about Tuffy. I've had many 'friends' through the years and every time one must pass to a better life it hurts. Having lost a good 'friend' last year and with my recent divorce I've decided to do without a dog for a while. When I see all of the great animals my forum friends have I get a twinge of melancholy mixed with liberal doses of envy. Dogs are truly "Man's Best Friend". I people could be as loyal to each other the world would show marked improvement.

On another note. My dog Bubba got into a skunk again. This time she must have got multiple doses of the smelly spray as direct hits.

I bathed her, threw away her bedding and pressure washed the deck. Then I shampooed her again with tomato juice.  She still stinks :yak:, anything else I can do to diminish the smell, other than wait?

I have a new bed to put down for her, but not until she smells better.

Lynn, I am truly sorry about the loss of a dear canine friend. I had to have my 14 year old American Bulldogge put down about two years ago and it was harder on me than I'd ever imagined it would be. My father was at the vet's office with me when we put her down and it was the only time in the 41 years  I'd been alive then, that I ever remembered seeing my Pop cry. Here is to you getting past the hurt and onward towards the remembrance of the fine and faithful friend that only a great dog can be.

Well Bubba still has a faint odor of skunk spray, but we have had her new bedding for a while now, so I gave her some steak fat trimmings, a ruffle on the head and said here's yer new bed. She piled right on it and looks like she's asleep already. I should be, but worked till 1:30 on a commercial freezer that had to be fixed or product would be lost.

Get yourself one of the classic R800's or something Danny. The new BMW K bikes are so fast that you don't have time to enjoy the scenery.

Here's my cut at it. I have weak willpower. If I own a motorcycle that will go 170 mph, I will eventually try to see what 170mph on a motorcycle feels like.

Here's my cut at it. I have weak willpower. If I own a motorcycle that will go 170 mph, I will eventually try to see what 170mph on a motorcycle feels like.

One of the bikes I had was a R-800 RT conversion. To a R-100RT. You need the extra power to push into the wind with a touring bike. I also had a K-100 LT, it was a little faster and I did push it as fast as it would go. But it would top out around 135 and the faring with a windshield etc would not let you get any more speed.
I drove for 5 hours straight at that speed into west Texas on I-10 once, just to do it. No radar detector, just a level horizon and very few cars.
Problem was I couldn't slow down once I got off the freeway and almost lost it on the country roads. Speed can be addictive.

We went down to our daughter's house this past weekend.  Our dog (the Border Collie) got to play with theirs (Lhasa Apso/Chihuahua mix).  They had a good time as did everyone that watched.

Another crazy deal involving the police in Austin. These guys seem to lack proper training big time!  This guy was playing frizzbee with his blue healer "Cisco", a cop pulled up and within 10 seconds had shot his dog.
This was a ridiculous situation of police officer lack of proper training.

My first gut instinct for a response was "I would have shot the cop".  Really though, did the dog survive?  What a tragedy.

The dog died. The cop was at the wrong address, yelling with a drawn gun at the owner of the dog. The dog was only barking. Big deal. I have worked around dogs all my adult life and was raised around them as a kid. We never shot a dog because it "barked".
Especially not a blue healer. This cop would be someone that I would not want to be around, I'm pretty sure he will shoot a person someday and I hope I'm wrong and he at least becomes a better cop out of this tragedy.

Roger I loved this video and so did my wife. Our oldest grandson is a Farrier and has a blue healer as well. Such a humble cowboy and so much joy in his sharing Skidboot with the rest of us.
The only part that saddened me was that he is going blind, my old dog Gump went blind about a year before he died. Yet he found his way around and did well for that year, right up to the end.

It feels nice to have them hanging around for now.

I was thinking of all the dogs running around lost today. Along with other animals that had been frightened to the extent they broke out of confinement and ran off in search of a safe place.
Along with all the tumultuous noise and beautiful display of sky candy we heard the howling and crying of the dogs last night.

I just don't get why folks would leave their pets outside on July 4th :?

Just found out our Mexican rescue dog's boarding fees have hit $600.00! We better get there soon or we'll have the most valuable mutt in Mexico.

Dan, fireworks play hell on poor doggies even in the house. They have pretty sensitive ears. I've yet to see a dog who liked them.

That is a valuable mutt at $600 already.

Our Chihuahua would be scared to death of the fearworks, but at least she could come and be at our feet or get in our lap. We would let the large dogs in as well. They would still be nervous but at least they stopped howling and running around trying to get away from the barrage.

A little note; we are planning on getting a dog soon. The wife wants a small house dog, I want a big un. Who do you think will win?

Several years ago on the 4th of July, an old lab I had at the time got so upset by the fireworks, which were about 5 miles away, that he managed to break out of the house while we were gone. Pushed out a window screen. A couple of really nice guys brought him home two hours after the fireworks, from info on his tag/collar. They found him, and I quote, " in the middle of the lake going down for the last time." They managed to pull him up into their boat. The lake, Muskegon Lake, was a mile from my home at that time, and it's a really big lake. He'd never before shown any real anxiety before because of fireworks. I was, needless to say, very thankful to those guys. How they ever saw a drowning black lab in the middle of that lake at night I'll never know.

No "almost" about it! That Skidboot video got me good.

Never knew of this thread. I love guitars, but it pale's in comparison to the impact dog's have had, and God willing, will continue to have on my life.

this is Bo. American Brittany. 8. Got him a bit shy of 3 from a rescue. Owned by a hunter who bought him to be a gun dog...and he's gun shy. Wasn't treated too kindly as a result of his "uselessness" (hunters language when he surrendered him).

Had a lot of dog's in my life, but none have connected quite like this guy. He's somethin' special.

Before Bo, I had the cake brothers (per my 6 yr old daughter at the time) Chocolate and Yellow. That's 220 lbs of muscle in this photo. No coincidence that my next dog was a 38 lb nearly shed free lap dog.

Brittany makes a great comprimise. Small enough, and with the disposition to be a lap dog, but also deep bark, athletic and tough, and big enough that people take heed, if that's a need.

and yes, I am totally biased.

I have 3 brittany spaniels ( referred to as a Brittany in the US and by the AKC ). I have 2 females, Dixie is a show champion and has FD hust test title and several field trial placements. She will be 11 in August. Paisley is my second female and still young at 3 years of age. She has show placements and has 4 points towards heew Field Champion AKC title.
My male is Maverick, and he will soon be 8 years of age. Maverick is an AKC Field Champion has show placements.
Would love to post pictures but I do not have enough posts to yet do that. They are my "kids" and I have tons of pictures of them all. They all hunt and going to bed at night is a race to see who gets t he best spot.  :)

Here is our five month old Blue Heeler/ Australian Shepard mix. She is super sweet and smart. Loves to play catch and fetch as well as other games with the grandkids. We feel very happy to have found her. One of our grandsons works as a farrier and is on ranches almost every day, so he found a litter of pups for us and we chose this one.

We put a down payment on a English Setter pup that was born this week. Looking forward to bird hunting with him. Get him in about seven weeks. Stay tuned for pictures.

That sounds like a good dog to have. But quite a change from your handful of lil Chihuahuas.
I had a pair of pointers once and one of them was a good quail dog, but she always found a way to escape the backyard and it was her demise.

Well, I like to say the chihuahuas are "mommy's" dogs. They are quite adorable though. No one will ever sneak up on us, that's for sure. The Setter will be my dog. I'm taking him or he's taking me to school and we're going to get that obedience thing down. Helen's son in law just got a wire haired pointing Griffon, beautiful pup, and we are planning on hunting them together. We had a beautiful but nutty boxer, quite a handful, but she was mommy's dog too. She found a new home for her where she could run and have a better life and drive someone else batty. Hopefully we can keep the Llewelyn in the yard. Fences are going up.

hmmmmm, my rescue white shepherd is a "mommy" dog, but only because the previous owner kicked it, so he's very leary of men.
mind you my fiancé, spoils him (bad thing to do to a shepherd) so i lose both times.
meh, she spoils me too, I can live with that.

sad part, he has a form of MS and is slowly losing connection with his rear legs, difficult to watch, and I won't be buying or making and hind quarter buggy thing for him.
yes we have steps down, front and back, only 5, but to him, every week there seem to be an extra one, and at 120 pounds, well, sad times on the horizon.....

My boxer Titan loves guitars. Whenever I play he lays down and lisyens. He is obsessed with reflections.  He loves to chase the light reflections from my guitar when I play in the afternoon sun. Of course, he prefers the sound of Larrivees. :humour:

On a most serious subject. The best dog I ever had the joy of befriending me was Gump, you can find pix of him in this thread.  In old age he was almost blind and plagued by many illnesses, including mange. I asked a friend to help me end his suffering and find a good spot to bury him.
In the end I was the one who stopped his suffering, it just seemed proper. He is buried on Willy Nelson's ranch on a hill overlooking the Perdenales river. I still can't talk to friends and family about that day. Except to say I put his favorite blanket around him.

puppy love indeed!

our 10 year old white shepherd is now completely blind and has the dog equivalent of MS.
meaning his hips are collapsing, he falls down the stairs, and walks into things.

a visit with the vet today, gave me the canine form of Morphine.
and a 24 hr call time frame to have him come to the house with the "sleeping" bag.......

sad times around here.....

Nice pooch Tom.

Kevin, sorry for your loss. We had to take our Wiemaraner to the vet last year for an 'endital' shot. He could barely stand on his own so we backed the highlander up to the door of the clinic so I would not have to carry him far. He was some over 100lbs. A couple minutes after leaving him on the exam table waiting outside fighting back tears, we were told its done and to come get him. I carried him back to the car cradled in my arms but had to turn sideways to get through the door, and when I did a muscle in my back screamed for relief. Well I ran the last 20 feet with him before plopping him into the back of the highlander
then fell to the ground in some serious pain, bawling like a baby for my beloved pooch. It was pitiful. A few minutes went by like that with me unable to move when the vet walked by and said "are you ok?" I looked up at him grimacing in tears and just shook my head.
There's probably somewhat to chuckle about that story, but not at the time.

The cycle of life goes on. Sorry to hear of your losses. They just live so fast, don't they? Lola is just full of life, love and mischief, I don't want to think about how short life can be for dogs. Right now I just want her to stop emptying the bathroom garbage every chance she gets. Speaking of that, she's quiet and I better go see what she's up to. Either that or the chihuahuas may be planning their attack and she's cowering in her kennel.

Sorry for your loss Kevin, as I've said in this thread we lost the best dog I've ever had and we buried him in a good spot with respect, as you have done.
Though Gump has been gone for several years now he is still remembered and spoken of fondly by the family.
For at least the first year after his death it was hard for me to speak about him.But that has changed and he lives on in all our memories and we speak about him and the funny, sometimes noble things he would do.
Our blue heeler/Australian shepherd pup is winning a large place in our hearts now. That's something I wasn't sure would happen again.

Hoping you will find another loyal friend.

Encouraging to see the new pups in peoples lives, and thanks again for the understanding.
I was actually surprised to get very considerate and sweet emails and calls from all three of my very busy kids around this loss.

As many around the forum are dog owners, I must admit that was the first time I've had to be the one to make the ultimate choice as to when the best time was to have him put out of his misery. (is there a "best" time?).

Anyways, that part, with my gal pal taking the day off, and the vet and his assistant coming here, was hardly a picnic.
The pooch just wouldn't let go of life, he made their job and our pain a little longer than needed, making the hurt even deeper.
lots to get over for sure. We sure get attached to our pooches.

Glad they don't make us wear one of those when we get fixed!  This past winter was the first winter we have not had at least one dog since 1991.  If there ever was a winter in S.E. Michigan to not have a dog, this was the one.  That didn't last long though.  We picked up this guy Labor Day weekend.  His name is Dingo and he is a Basenji / terrier mix.  9 months old and a real whirlwind.  He came fixed so he doesn't have to wear the cone of shame.  We just put it on him for fun!

Today while mowing and trimming my wife brought a baby rabbit to me that our dog had brought to her unharmed.  Our dog has brought a lot of baby rabbits to us this year. We've taught her not to harm them and we try to find the hole where they came from. Until today I had never found a nest of rabbits on our property.
Scanning the front yard I spotted a bunch of fuzzy Grey hair and as soon as I moved the hair aside a baby rabbit cried out. So I put the other one back and covered the hole with hair and grass. Now momma can come back later and do her job. As for our dog we will keep her out  back or in the house.

So here is our new baby, Joey the Australian Terrier.  He was 8 1/2 weeks old when I took the pictures Oct. 17.  We picked him out of a litter of 5 when he was 49 days old with the aid of the "Volhard Puppy Test".  Have any of you used that test to pick out a puppy?  This is the second time we have done this test to pick out a pup.  Our Cairn Terrier, Broc was the first.  He is now 6 years old and has turned out to be a great dog.  This new little guy seems to be a bit more spunky and aggressive than the test would indicate, but we'll see.  If anyone can mellow him out a bit, my wife can.  She's a natural "dog whisperer".

Helen keeps reminding me that I wanted a puppy. Lola goes to her last obedience class next week or as she sees it, the place where she goes bonkers cos there's other dogs there and she's going to get a lot of treats. We're supposed to graduate. She's the youngest dog there and I fear she'll be held back.  :laughin:

She's forty pounds now and hits like a blitzing Clay Matthews. I call her the Lolatic. She's sitting at my feet now chewing a toy and being really good. Maybe there's hope that this behavior will become more common. At least, I think it's a toy, I'm afraid to check.  :laughin:

Post by: L07 Shooting Star on November 14, 2014, 04:51:29 PM
So this morning Lucy and I are sitting at the computer, looking at dog food brand websites and comparing nutritional information, ingredients, (propaganda?)  because our darling little baby, Joey, isn't eating very well and we're trying to figure out why.  Said puppy, who is almost 13 weeks, is romping around our feet under the computer desk, having a great time.

All of a sudden, there is a big KAPOOF, a big spark, the monitor goes blank, the computer goes off, and the lights go out!?  At the same time, Joey whips out of the room like a bat out of hell.  What the F***!, we both exclaim at the same time.  Did our computer just blow up or what?  A few seconds of reflection go by and .... "did our little darling just chew some wires down there"?  So I go downstairs, and sure enough the breaker for that circuit has tripped.  Meanwhile Lucy grabs Joey and checks out his mouth for any damage, and I get a flashlight and start checking the nest of wires, one wire at a time.

So, first I discover that the input cable that connects the powered subwoofer on the floor with the audio output on the computer, has been chewed in several places and almost severed in one place.  I'm thinking well that's unfortunate, but wouldn't cause the breaker to trip.  So I keep on checking wire by wire, and sure enough the subwoofer's main power cord has been severed to the point it is hanging together by a few threads of wire.  Aha, so that is why the breaker tripped.  At this point I still have no idea if the computer, monitor, or printer has been fried.  And I wasn't going to reset the breaker until I thoroughly checked every inch of every wire under there.  Fortunately, all other cables appeared to be unchewed.

The next hour was spent re-splicing and soldering the wires back together.  Then I hooked everything back up, told the wife to standby and holler if anything went awry, and went to the basement to reset the breaker.  Turns out, all is fixed now, and everything came through with no damage.

We both learned a valuable lesson from this and, hopefully, so did Joey.  He will not be out of our sight like this again, that's for sure.  We are just lucky that we were right there in the room when it happened and the damage was detected immediately.  This could have caused a fire or damaged our computer.   We are now going to have to make a thorough inspection of every possible accessible wire in the house, in case he has done some damage elsewhere while we weren't paying attention.  Joey is lucky too, as he could have been hurt or worse.

We can't blame the puppy of course, but it demonstrates what can happen if you let a puppy have the run of the house and you let your guard down for even a moment.

I have attached a picture of Joey hanging out with his big brother, Broc the Cairn Terrier.  It was taken on Nov. 10.

I can relate to that one. Lola chewed through the cord on my keyboard a few weeks back. I now have my computer turned sideways and my woofer beside it so she can't get behind the desk and so she won't flop down and turn it off as she did one too many times. She's gotta be where I am though and will bark ceaselessly if I try to sit in my office and leave her elsewhere. Dogs!

It's been a while since I posted a picture of our dog, Rebus.  He's 5 years old now and still as much of a handful (almost) as he was when we got him.  He still watches TV and barks whenever another animal comes on...  Does anybody else have a dog that watches TV?  My sister has a Westie that does.  He doesn't bark at animals, just violence.

Helen got a new puppy. Her fourth long coated chihuahua. Introducing Sierrakruze's Dart to the Heart or, as we call her, Arrow. She was just a few weeks old here and still with the breeder and since this picture has come to Wisconsin and gotten her big girl ears. She's climbing my leg right now wondering where her mommy went. And here are all four of the Wisconsin Blue Chis (they love their Blue Buffalo).

This was the only formal portrait that she would let me take of her. The flash made her think lightning and lightning means thunder and thunder means it is time to hide.

I find it very curious that this thread just revived after being dormant for a year and at the exact same time as I've been considering looking for a new loyal friend.
I've missed having the four fur pawed tail wagger around to fill the home with many fun and trying times. I'll have to ask my grandson, who is a farrier to keep his eyes open as he goes around the ranches. I'll post pics when this works out.

Here's my crazy Italian Greyhound.  8 this year.  He is an EXTREMELY emotional dog.  Always has to be with us.  Freaks out if we're gone too long.  If the wife and I aren't getting along he becomes very distraught until we make peace.  Has helped keep us together through some hard times.

So yesterday my wife got creative and decided to sew winter jackets for our two Australian Terriers, Joey and Jackson (Joey is the one with the hairiest face).  She cut them out from a couple of my old Alberta Forest Service parkas, which had very warm goose-down linings and wind/waterproof outer shells.  For a bit of nostalgia, she sewed one of my old AFS shoulder flashes on each jacket.  So now they can face the cold Alberta weather and stay warm and cozy on their walks in their custom made one of a kind jackets.

She is also sweeter than ice cream and lives to be petted.

Thought I'd share one of Frizbee who passed away recently.

We picked up the Friz back in May 2002 as a pup from a local long time pet store. She was a dead wringer for a German Sheppard as a pup an grew to about 40 pounds. She was my companion through all my run training and was great to my kids.
